Who’s in Your Circle?

Oct 14, 2024

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I’m curious—have you heard this quote before? It’s a simple yet powerful reminder of how deeply you’re influenced by the people around you. Whether you realize it or not, the company you keep shapes your thoughts, beliefs, and ultimately, your success.

Author and one of my mentors, Jack Canfield, shares in his book The Success Principles that “the people you habitually associate with determine as much as 95% of your success or failure in life.” Bottom line-the people you spend the most time with have a massive impact on your mindset, habits, and potential for growth.

I’ve experienced this first hand throughout my journey.  Early in my career as an actress, I was cast in my first professional acting job alongside Rosemary Prinz, a veteran actress known for her work onstage, in soap operas and film. To me, Rosemary was the epitome of grace and mastery. I remember sitting in our shared dressing room, intimidated but in awe, thinking, “Jennifer, pay attention. Watch. Listen. Learn.”

I didn’t just observe Rosemary on stage, I watched her every move backstage, too. Her discipline, attention to detail, and presence taught me volumes—simply by being in the room with her. That experience shaped how I approached not just acting but how I approached business when I transitioned to entrepreneurship. I knew then, and I know now, that if you want to grow, you need to surround yourself with people who are already where you want to be.

When I first started in business, I quickly realized there was so much I didn’t know—and even more that I didn’t know I didn’t know. Every time I wanted to take my business to the next level or learn a new skill, I made it a point to seek out people who were thriving in that space. I watched them closely, took notes, and implemented what I learned. The same holds true for you - if you want to reach a new level, you need to surround yourself with people who can help take you there.

Think about your circle-are they lifting you up or holding you back?  And is it possible that you are unintentionally self-sabotaging or staying stuck because you haven’t upgraded your circle?

Success Tips for the New Season:

Here are some things to consider as you reflect on your circle:

  1. Evaluate Your Circle: Who are the five people you spend the most time with? Are they supporting your growth or holding you in place?
  2. Seek Out Mentors and Coaches: Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Mentors and coaches can be invaluable guides, offering insights and feedback that help you reach your next level.
  3. Be Intentional with Your Time: Make sure you’re spending time with people who share resources, ideas, and positive energy. Remember, "Success leaves clues." The more time you spend with those who’ve mastered the areas you want to improve, the faster you’ll grow.

Just imagine what a difference it could make to elevate your circle. The right people will see your strengths, share your vision, and help you rise to new heights.  And that’s the kind of circle that propels you forward.

As you head into the final stretch of the year,  I invite you to take stock of who’s in your corner and be intentional about creating a circle that aligns with your goals and dreams.
